About Us
History
As an outgrowth of the Memphis AIA150 Committee formed in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the American Institute of Architects and its “Blueprint for America“ initiative, the idea and momentum for a civic design center for Memphis and the surrounding region emerged. To that end, a sub-committee was formed early in 2006 and charged with conducting the necessary research and planning to launch such a center. Included were representatives from five partner organizations: 1) the American Institute of Architects, Memphis Chapter (AIA); 2) the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA); 3) the University of Memphis; 4) the UrbanArt Commission; and 5) the Urban Land Institute (ULI).
The Memphis Regional Design Center filed its Charter & Bylaws; formed its Board of Trustees and Steering Committee; received its letter of incorporation as a not for profit organization from the State of Tennessee; and began to raise the start up funding in the fall of 2007.
